Abercrombie & Fitch Introduce Sexist T-Shirts

Do A&F T-shirts Promote Recreational Sex

“Show the Twins”
“Female Students Wanted for Sexual Research”
“Female Streaking Encouraged”

You’ll find these lovely sentiments on the New College line of  T-shirts from Abercrombie & Fitch. The American Family Association (AFA) is not happy.

In a recent email press release, AFA president Tim Wildmon stated, “Abercrombie & Fitch does not merely sell a popular line of clothing, they sell a lifestyle. And because A&F clothing is popular among teens and college kids, the influence of their sex-as-recreation lifestyle is widespread.” According to the AFA, younger teens and pre-teens are also a target of the retailer’s “sexualized shirts” and “pornographic-themed material.”

The AFA is right. Abercrombie & Fitch knows darned well that kids, tweens and young teens covet the clothes their elder role models wear, and A&F clothing is well represented in pop culture. Characters from The O.C., The Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill and the blockbuster movie Twilight wear A&F apparel. The actors who play our favorite roles — Jennifer Anniston, Chace Crawford, Alexis Bledel, Nikki Reed — wear A&F in real life, too.

But beyond the whole “sex-as-recreation” argument is the fact that these T-shirts are just downright sexist.

Parents:  Will you patronize this company whose “messages” degrade young women?
