Celebrity-inspired Puffer Coats for Kids
Written by Mary Fetzer on November 17, 2009 – 8:44 am -Kids love to be outdoors in the cold weather, but we parents often worry about exposing them to the harsh, windy elements.
Take a cue from celebrity moms and dads, and stuff your little one into a puffer coat. The extra insulation in these Michelin-Man-style jackets offers warmth without weight.

Liev Schreiber’s son, Sasha, (left) is comfy in babyGap’s Warmest Jacket in True Navy ($50). Heidi Klum’s beautiful daughter Leni (center) sports a fashionble Juicy Couture Kids Fur-Trimmed Puffer Jacket in Muse ($252). Olive Baron Cohen (right) has excellent taste as well, modeling the Juicy Baby Puffer Parker in Ivory($148). And Kingston Rossdale, Moses Martin, Ryder Russell, and James Broderick have all been spotted in the Appaman Puffy Coat ($90).
But kids grow fast, and they’ll wear these jackets for just one season. Here are some affordable — but equally cozy — puffer coats for your little ones:
The Children’s Place Color Block Puffer Jacket (left), $34.65, is a water-resistant coat with a toasty micro-fleece lining. Available in the gray/red/white combination for boys (left) and a gray/pink/white combo for girls (not shown).
Land’s End is famous for creating cold-weather favorites. The new Kids’ Pattern Quilted Down Jacket (right), $44.50, has a temperature rating of -30 degrees Fahrenheit! It comes in two fun colors: Rich Red Plaid and Dark Slate Plaid.
Rothschild, long-time maker of delightful girl’s coats, offers a Hooded Long Puffer Coat (left) for sizes 4-6X in this lovely pink with white “fur” trim. The longer length will keep her lower back and hips protected from the cold. On sale at Sears for $28. (Sears also has this coat in other colors for big girls, sizes 7-16 (not shown), $32.)
Boys will look sharp the 77 City Trek Puffer Coat (right) at American Eagle Outfitters, on sale now for $49.50. It comes in Yellow Slicker (right), Classic Navy, and Green Felt.

Trendy & Practical Rain Boots for Kids and Moms
Written by Mary Fetzer on November 12, 2009 – 3:41 pm -
Good old-fashioned rain boots are all the rage this season, and the selection of colors and styles is as varied as the wearers. Sure, you can pick up a pair of ridiculously expensive Juicy Couture, Jimmy Choo, or Burberry rain boots, but they’re pretty boring. For the price of just one designer rain boot, you can buy a pair (or two!) for each member of your family — just visit your local Target or shop Target online. Every one of the styles shown below is under $25… some are only $15!

Princess Di wore the Original Hunter rain boot. Hilary Duff (left) wears Burberry Wellington rain boots.Check out this fun assortment to wear with jeans, leggings, skirts… or whatever you fancy!

What Not To Wear (When You’re A Celebrity)
Written by Mary Fetzer on November 10, 2009 – 5:03 pm -Teenagers love taking fashion risks. Sometimes it works (doesn’t Selena Gomez always look adorable?), and sometimes it doesn’t (remember fashion bomb Mischa Barton?). Here are just a few examples of what NOT to wear when you’re a teen model, musician, actress or celebrity of any kind:

Taylor Momsen
When she’s not playing Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl, Taylor Momsen is trying way too hard to look like she doesn’t care about fashion.
The young woman needs a personal stylist… pronto.

Rihanna
Pop superstar Rihanna’s sleeveless top is funky. Her lipstick is gorgeous. The colossal matching sunglasses are fine.
The Kate Gosselin hair (on anyone, ever) is not.
.
*
Miley Cyrus
Yahoo’s OMG fashion critics compared Miley’s nasty dress to her famous father’s infamous mullet.
The fishnet stockings and a come-hither pout don’t fool us Miley, you still look like you’re 12.

Emma Stone
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past actress appears to be channeling an angelic version of Wednesday Addams. The material and design are matronly, and the color blends right in with Emma’s pale skin.
The unnecessary bow around her neck is the only “blue ribbon” she’ll win with this ensemble.

Your Little Girl Will Never Lose Her Doll Again
Written by Mary Fetzer on November 4, 2009 – 10:00 am -
Everyone loves to see a cute kid pretending to be a mom.
Matilda Rose, 2, daughter of actress Michelle Williams and the late Heath Ledger, knows how to get around town with her baby doll. She was spotted in Brooklyn sporting a clever doll carrier on her back, allowing her to take her dolly with her everywhere without tying up her curious hands.
Myriam and Eric Hildenbrand, a New York husband and wife team, recently developed myWallaby Agile Doll Carrier to help all little girls solve the dilemma of how to carry their dolls. myWallaby Agile Doll Carrier fits a variety of different dolls and teddy bears, ranging in size 12-18 inches.
The Hildenbrands loved the idea of patterning their concept after a kangaroo, but the name “kangaroo” was too common and overused. Instead, they settled on a wallaby which is “just as cute with a pouch like kangaroos.”
The first bag in the product line – the Agile bag – is named for one of the over 30 sub-species of wallabies. Future myWallaby products will be named after the other sub-species.

Made in the USA, the high-quality myWallaby Agile Doll Carrier is made from the finest materials and is completely machine washable. Available in a variety of delightful color combinations, it can be used as a doll carrier or a purse. The myWallaby Agile Bag is different from other doll carriers because it is designed to carry a doll facing forward – like a wallaby!
The myWallaby Agile Doll Carrier can be purchase for $49.99 at myWallaby.com and Amazon.

We’ve all seen celebrity dads with their “man bags.” Do you think the myWallaby Agile Doll Carrier is a suitable toy for a boy? Let us know!

Bebe Bella Designs for Perfect Baby Shower Gifts
Written by Mary Fetzer on October 29, 2009 – 1:39 am -
Before their twins were born, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony held a baby shower on the rooftop of NYC’s Gramercy Hotel. Guests lavished the couple with silk layettes and other super-expensive gifts. Likewise, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale reportedly received thousands of dollars worth of clothing, bedding, and jewelry for not-yet-born Zuma.
Once upon a time, the baby shower was created to provide an expectant mother with the gifts she really needed — cloth diapers, receiving blankets, bottle sets, and grooming necessities. The modern baby shower, however, has taken on a life of its own. Guests attempt to outdo one another with expensive, elaborate — and not always useful — baby gifts. As a veteran mom, you know it’s impossible to have too many onesies, but T-shirts don’t look like much next to an Eddie Bauer stroller or Coach diaper bag.
Bebe Bella Designs has the solution. The company creates practical baby items from the most luxurious fabrics. The result is a high-end yet useful gift.
Minky Chenille Blankets
The Minky Chenille Baby Blanket (30″x30″), left, and the Minky Chenille Blankee (15″x15″) are made of the finest chenille fabrics. The blanket ($50) and blankee ($22.50) come in 17 different color combinations to coordinate beautifully with any nursery and layette. Minky Chenille products are Made in the USA and retain their softness and luster with every washing. The more you use this blanket, the more you’ll love it. A toddler size blanket (43″x35″) is also available, $64.
Satin Minky Blankets
The Satin & Minky Blankets, right, are available in the same sizes as the Minky Chenille (above). With 25 combinations of solids, polka dots, and paisleys, you’re sure to find the perfect gift for that baby-to-be. The baby blanket is $40, the little blankee is $20, and the toddler blanket is $54.
Bibs
A bib may be a necessity, but it can still make a fashion statement. The Bebe Bella Designs bib, left, is minky chenille front and back. $12.50 each 14 colors, like Fuschia, Brown, Lime Green, Navy Blue, and Lavender.
Melissa Sachse founded Bebe Bella Designs to provide “something for those who want simple elegance, the latest trends, or something in between.” The lovely company name is derived from the French term “bebe,” meaning “baby,” and the Italian “bella” for “beauty.”

10 Best Dressed Teens in Tinseltown, Part 2
Written by Mary Fetzer on October 26, 2009 – 4:24 pm -Click to access >> 10 Best Dressed Teens in Tinseltown, Part 1
Our kids worry about how they look for school, the mall, the football game… not the red carpet. That’s why my picks for the best-dressed teen celebrities is based on what the stars look like when they’re not modeling for the paparazzi.
#5 Chace Crawford
It’s probably unfair to put Chace Crawford on a best-dressed list. With a face and physique like his, Chace would look chic in a paper bag.
But the Gossip Girl star really does look his best when he’s not filming. Whether he’s wearing a white T-shirt or a Yankees ball cap, Chace drives the girls crazy.
Who else would rock a pair of Diesel Revick 88Z jeans (left) like Chace?

#4 Minka Kelly
Is it possible that Minka inherited her fashion sense from her parents? Doubt it — Dad’s an Aerosmith guitarist, and Mom’s a former Vegas showgirl.
The Friday Night Lights beauty always looks amazing.
Here (left) Minka struts her stuff in a pair of Hudson Signature bootcut jeans. Wow. And her furry friend makes the perfect accessory!

#3 Zac Efron
Zac once said that he’s “an actor who can sing a little bit.” But after his performances in High School Musical and Hairspray, it appears he can do both… and more.
What’s not to like about Zac? He’s talented, handsome, devoted to his girlfriend, has great hair, and always looks fab.
This (left) is how he dresses to get a bite to eat at Hugo’s Restaurant.

#2 Demi Lovato
Disney’s newest rising star is Demi Lovato. The star of Camp Rock, Princess Protection Program, and Sonny with a Chance is also a rising star on the fashion front.
Demi likes to take risks trying anything from neon pink lipstick to gothic chains and studs.
Her unique style really shines here (left) in this IRO Vardith cotton vest paired with ripped jeans and strappy black boots.
It’ll be interesting to see how Demi transitions from funky teen to young adult.
#1 Leighton Meester
Gossip Girl Blair Waldorf has access to the finest fashions. Sometimes it’s tough to tell if Leighton Meester, who plays Blair, is wearing her own duds or something from the show.
Leighton has superb taste. Here she is (left) out on the town in Phi zip black leather pants and a Proenza Schouler Resort 2010 bag.
Leighton has the best fashion instincts (or maybe the best stylist?) in Tinsel Town.

10 Best-Dressed Celebrity Teens in Tinseltown, Part 1
Written by Mary Fetzer on October 21, 2009 – 11:16 pm -We identify specific looks with veteran celebrities: Angelina Jolie wears black. Victoria Beckham wears a constant pout. Kim Kardashian wears clothes that are at least one size too small.
The real trendsetters are the young Hollywood celebs. The teen set isn’t afraid to take fashion risks and flaunt the latest styles. And young people seem more willing to make casual dress interesting and easy to imitate.
Here are my (non-red carpet) picks for the 10 best-dressed young people in Tinseltown:
#10 Emma Watson
The elegant Harry Potter star has grown up before our very eyes, and the older she gets, the more glamour she is. The paparazzi have never caught her in a bad-fashion moment.
Emma easily wears Louis Vuitton, Chanel, D&G and Burberry in photo shoots, on the red carpet, and even at the airport (shown here).
Emma’s best fashion accessory? Her adorable, ever-present smile.
#9 Dev Patel
The award-winning Slumdog Millionaire actor flaunts award-winning style. The handsome teen always looks sharp — whether sporting a suit, a T-shirt or one of his trademark vests.
Dev understands the importance of details (like the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra watch he wears here).
Look for more of this fine young man the upcoming film M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender.
#8 Taylor Swift
She’s the beautiful country songbird has captured the hearts of all music lovers (and Kanye West haters).
Not only can Taylor sing, she can work it baby. She looks equally amazing in a Balenciaga gown and a Topshop shirt (left).
My favorite thing about Taylor? Her incredible ringlets of spun gold. I don’t care if she wears them long and loose or up a messy chignon — she has hair to die for.
#7 Taylor Lautner
#8 and #7 on our list share a first name, awesome style, and a new movie. The Taylors star together in 2010’s Valentine’s Day.
But it’s another movie that has made Lautner a super hunk — Twilight and the millions of Team Jacob fans who prefer werewolves over vampires.
He looks fabulous in this Diesel Luchas leather jacket (left), but his best asset is the 30 pounds of muscle he packed on for New Moon.
#6 Vanessa Hudgens
Vanessa Hudgens’ High School Musical character didn’t have much confidence, but the actress herself has plenty.
Vanessa doesn’t dress like everyone else… she has her own look, and she wears it well.
Vanessa defines boho chic. No pattern is too bold for her. She indulges in flowy clothes, fringes, tons of jewelry and funky headbands — sometimes all at once!
Many girls want to imitate this bronze beauty, but few will be successful.
Stay tuned for my top 5 Best Dressed Tinseltown Teens!

Little Girls in High Heels? No way!
Written by Mary Fetzer on October 5, 2009 – 9:59 am -
Buying for a six-year-old diva can be so much fun… until it comes to shoes.
All summer long, my cute kid wore adorable sandals or just went barefoot. As school approached, I got serious about finding practical, comfy shoes. Who knew it would be so difficult? Sure, there’s plenty of trendy footwear like the big girls (and Suri Cruise, right) wear, but my daughter needed something functional for the long days at school.
Clunky shoes with big heels cannot be good for her growing bones. Those charming ballerina flats look great, but they rub and cause blistering at the heel (if they stay on at all). Boots and Uggs are comfy, but they’re too hot to wear all day. Sneakers and athletic shoes are fine for Phys Ed days, but a style-conscious gal needs something with which to accessorize her fashionista wardrobe, too!
I decided to scour the Internet for wearable shoes. I had my daughter properly sized — she’s a 12 medium — and went online shopping. It took some work, but eventually I found some age-appropriate, comfortable fall shoes, like these:
BeanSport Mary Janes from LL Bean
These delightful little shoes come in prints (clearwater blue floral and dark mulberry butterflies, left) and solids (chocolate, light taupe and sea lavendar).
.
.
Merrell Kids Encore Adams Leather
These fall/winter pigskin loafers are easy to slip off and on. The shoes are available in this taupe brown/turquoise color combo as well as black with red trim.
.
.
Wave The Date 2 Reaction by Kenneth Cole
Faux patent leather upper with a square toe soft suede details. Adjustable buckle straps with hidden elastics secure a perfect fit. Neutral colors include black patent (shown), dark brown and burgundy.
.
.
Jodi II from First Kiss
The simple slip-on shoe boasts fabric piping and a decorative Mary Jane strap. The rubber outsole offers sure, safe footing. This shoe is available in both navy (left) and black.
Regularly $39.99, now just $19.99 at Famous Footwear.com
.
.
Every little girl should be allowed to play in high heels, but every little girl also needs shoes that preserve her precious little feet.
What do you think of Suri’s high-heel stroll through the city?
