Young Hollywood Trendsetters
Written by Mary Fetzer on September 28, 2009 – 11:35 pm -Teen fashion trends are inspired by the most popular celebrities of the moment. This generation looks to Disney TV stars and Twilight movie icons. Forget what these stylish young women are wearing on the red carpet, it’s their everyday look that keeps us interested (and imitating).
So the next time you’re at the mall trying to find something — anything — for your teen to wear, try to picture the actresses and musical performers your kids adore.
FOR EDGY FASHION…
…think Miley Cyrus. With ripped jeans, off-the-shoulder tops and message tees, Miley stands apart from the rest of young Hollywood. Her off-screen attire is a tad more adventuresome than her clean Hannah Montana wear.
Here (right) Miley texts on her Sidekick LX while chillin’ in Gypsy 05 Riley peace-print wide-let sweats and cutoff sweatshirt. Who else would consider topping this casual outfit with a tween newsboy cap and braids?!
FOR THAT NEW ENGLAND PREPPY LOOK…
… think The Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez (left). Heralded as “the next Miley Cyrus,” Selena always wears clothes that are fun, fashionable and age-appropriate.
In this photo, Selena looks adorable in an American Eagle cardigan and skinny black jeans. The black ballet flats, big shades and striped hobo bag keep the outfit from looking too studious.
FOR THAT BOHO HIPPIE-CHICK LOOK…
…think Vanessa Hudgens (right). The High School Musical star receives rave reviews on her signature laid-back fashion sense. Vanessa is a natural beauty who can make a burlap sack look gorgeous.
In this photo, Vanessa is modeling a truly modern hippie style. She’s wearing funky Ecko Red crosshatch shorts and a versatile Ecko Red cropped denim jacket. Vanessa completes with outfit with unique knee-high socks and the Red by Marc Ecko Chalsie-Prissy Sneaker. And, according to teens in the know, even her Sharpie is a hip accessory!
FOR THAT TRUE POP STAR LOOK…
…think Ashley Tisdale (left). The Disney superstar knows how to act, sing and work it, baby! From her hair color to her hats, Ashley is a true trendsetter.
In this pic, Ashley flaunts a Louis Vuitton Monogram Multicolore Speedy 30 handbag (Sharpei would approve!), Nike Legend High Premium LE boots, a Blue Life V-Luptuous tee, Rebel Yell M Patch Foldover Leggings and the True Religion’s super-cool horseshoe hat. We even like her buff male accessory!
THE GIRL-NEXT-DOOR LOOK…
…think Ashley Greene. As Twilight’s beloved Alice, Ashley has become America’s sweetheart. Her big-screen alter ego is known for her sense of style, and Ashley herself is, too.
In this photo (right), Ashley was spotted wearing a darling Miss Me embroidered empire long-length dress in plum. Can’t you just totally picture this dress on pixie-haired Alice!?
Hollywood offers so many more young fashionistas — Emma Watson, Lauren Conrad, Miranda Cosgrove… the list goes on and on!
If you could copy any starlet’s look, whose would it be?

Boots for summer? Definitely!
Written by Mary Fetzer on June 8, 2009 – 11:05 am -
Tell your teen to forget about sandals! This summer, girls’ footwear is all about boots… fringed boots!
So what’s the right way to wear this warm-weather footwear? Check out these celeb examples:
Whether dressed for the red carpet or a shopping excursion with girlfriends, Ashley Tisdale (left) always has the look teens want. Here she pairs fringed boots with a pair of dark skinny jeans. Ashley’s summery top and fun sunglasses add a seasonal element to the outfit.
Actress Joy Bryant (right) struts her stuff like the former model she is. Combining a pair of fringe boots with a knee-length flowered skirt, Joy pulls together a cool and casual ensemble. By switching out the jean jacket for a fitted blazer, she can go from casual to dressy in an instant.
Sometimes she looks like she needs a new stylist, but this time Mischa Barton (left) got it right. Her moccasin boots and Native American-inspired mini are perfectly complementary, and her simple white T-shirt keeps her from looking like she’s in costume.
Becki Newton (right) steps out in a pair of rhinestone-studded fringe boots. The Ugly Betty star donned an adorable strapless dress at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. The dressy elements on these heeled boots makes them perfect for dresses and jeans, but pairing them with Daisy Dukes might just send the wrong message…
Miley Cyrus (left), on the other hand, shows how not to wear fringe boots. Her train wreck of an outfit is made even worse with suede royal blue footwear. She might have looked cool with the layered tees or the neon boots, but wearing them together — along with those holey tights — is just plain wrong.
Other celebrities sighted wearing fringe boots in summer include Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens, Carmen Electra, Kim Kardashian, Sienna Miller, Lauren Conrad, Kate Hudson, and Kate Moss.
You and your teen will find a fabulous selection of fringe boots online at Zappos, Amazon, Totem Pole, and Sheplers.
Okay, so there are pros to wearing warm-weather boots: you’ll look trendy, and you can skip a few pedicures. But don’t you think the con of having sweaty, stinky feet totally outweighs the benefits?

Dress Like a Celebrity for Prom
Written by Mary Fetzer on April 20, 2009 – 11:45 am -Prom is right around the corner, and the race for the dress is on! Helping your daughter, niece, or pal look for a new trend this spring? Clue them in to the latest celebrity dressy-dress rage… short dresses. Today’s big-screen fashionistas are bringing short to new heights with prints, glitz, beads, and bows.
Check out these fab dresses on your favorite stars:
If you like AJ Michalka’s adorable strapless cream dress with brown stripe detailing, then you’re sure to like this brocade dress with this season’s must-have bow and ruffles. Add some elegance by wearing your hair up. Cutout shoes to match the details add the finishing touch. This dress is about $149 and comes in pastel colors: baby blue, lilac, mint, pink, and ivory.
Ashley Tisdale, aka Sharpay from “High School Musical” fame, goes for the glitz in this shimmery metallic dress. You, too, can sparkle in this formal bling-embellished formal dress. In gorgeous black, white, gold, coral, or brown, this dress is just $169 — leaving plenty of room in your budget for some shiny cutout shoes and bling, bling, bling!
Selena Gomez looks elegant in a black dress with a striking detailed neckline. Get a similar look with this black, chiffon dress with a lace-up back. The shoes give it that same Egyptian feel that Selena has going on. If black is too formal for you, try this style in red, turquoise, coral, or ivory. This dress is a steal at $129.
Lovely Brittany Snow dons a pale satin dress for a youthful, yet classic, look. You’ll be glamourous, too, in this unique satin concoction. If the silver is just not bold enough for you, then try this on in one of its many other colors, including magenta, purple, teal, black, and brown. For a mere $119, you will look like a million bucks!
Like Hillary Duff, you’re sure to turn heads in a brightly colored, strapless dress. The gathered sweetheart neckline enhances a small bust, and the bold hue is attention-getting. This fuchsia charmeuse dress, also available in stunning royal blue, has enough sparkle and detail that you won’t have to fuss over jewelry. You can snag this gem for $141.
Add a little more formality to your short dress with a lace overlay. Shenae Grimes looks amazing in an off-the-shoulder, belted dress. Get Shenae’s Beverly-Hills look with this short, lacy dress with a satin ribbon belt. The lace comes in black, plum, and dark rose. So affordable at just $136.
Find all of these dresses — and hundreds more — at Prom Dresses 2009.

Big Sunglasses Help You Look Your Best in No Time!
Written by Mary Fetzer on April 1, 2009 – 1:32 pm -Moms are busy. Always putting the kids first means you sometimes don’t look your best. Whether your baby was up all night and you didn’t get any shut-eye, or you had to pack three school lunches this morning and didn’t get time to apply your makeup, you just look tired.
To hide those dark circles, take a cue from the celebrities. When going out about the town without the benefit of their personal makeup artist, superstars just slip on a pair of enormous sunglasses and somehow look entirely glamorous. When it comes to eye protection, bigger is better. Sure, oversized sunglasses shield your eyes from the sun and wind, but more importantly they look fa-a-a-bulous! Slip on a pair of giant specs and you’ll instantly feel like a superstar.
Especially fashionable are the huge aviator-style sunglasses. Victoria “Posh” Beckham pairs them with bikinis and couture alike. But you don’t have to drop $400 for a pair of Gucci’s. Pick up a pair for under $20 (and same-day shipping!) at Sunglass Warehouse.
Kristen Stewart hides Bella’s eyes behind 80’s-style metal frames. Modern Glasses Heart Black Fashion Metal Frame sunglasses are a steal at just $5.99. They’re available for women and girls.
Look like a movie star in the big, black shades often seen on Vanessa Hudgens. Your fans will hardly recognize you in a pair of handmade Hoven Big Risky Sunglasses in Black Gloss. Shop Spydersurf for free shipping on orders over $75.
Add a little color to your ensemble with chic red sunglasses like Hillary Duff’s. You can get her look with a pair of Steve Madden shades for just $34.95 at Shoe Buy.
Miley Cyrus looks cool and casual with her round lenses and clear frames. Get this fun look at Wal-Mart with No Boundaries Compass Sunglasses… just $5!
Ashley Tisdale pulls off a fun, stylish look with bright red frames. They’re youthful and trendy and come in just about every color you can imagine. The Belt Outlet sells Elieshades Boutique line of sunglasses in a myriad of designs and shades. Get Ashley’s look with ALLIE Designer Square Plastic Sunglasses for $19.95!
Audrina Partridge sports what Macy’s calls “deliberate style with a chic urban shape.” These ultra-cool shades are comfy and practical without being boring. The Jessica Simpson Shield Sunglasses ($50 at Macy’s) are available in black, gold, matte platinum and tortoise/blue.
Protect your eyes and show off your fashion sense with flair. When it comes to shades, remember that bigger is better.
Tell us why you wear sunglasses?

b. to look cool
c. to hide from your friends
