Little Girls in High Heels? No way!
Written by Mary Fetzer on October 5, 2009 – 9:59 am -
Buying for a six-year-old diva can be so much fun… until it comes to shoes.
All summer long, my cute kid wore adorable sandals or just went barefoot. As school approached, I got serious about finding practical, comfy shoes. Who knew it would be so difficult? Sure, there’s plenty of trendy footwear like the big girls (and Suri Cruise, right) wear, but my daughter needed something functional for the long days at school.
Clunky shoes with big heels cannot be good for her growing bones. Those charming ballerina flats look great, but they rub and cause blistering at the heel (if they stay on at all). Boots and Uggs are comfy, but they’re too hot to wear all day. Sneakers and athletic shoes are fine for Phys Ed days, but a style-conscious gal needs something with which to accessorize her fashionista wardrobe, too!
I decided to scour the Internet for wearable shoes. I had my daughter properly sized — she’s a 12 medium — and went online shopping. It took some work, but eventually I found some age-appropriate, comfortable fall shoes, like these:
BeanSport Mary Janes from LL Bean
These delightful little shoes come in prints (clearwater blue floral and dark mulberry butterflies, left) and solids (chocolate, light taupe and sea lavendar).
.
.
Merrell Kids Encore Adams Leather
These fall/winter pigskin loafers are easy to slip off and on. The shoes are available in this taupe brown/turquoise color combo as well as black with red trim.
.
.
Wave The Date 2 Reaction by Kenneth Cole
Faux patent leather upper with a square toe soft suede details. Adjustable buckle straps with hidden elastics secure a perfect fit. Neutral colors include black patent (shown), dark brown and burgundy.
.
.
Jodi II from First Kiss
The simple slip-on shoe boasts fabric piping and a decorative Mary Jane strap. The rubber outsole offers sure, safe footing. This shoe is available in both navy (left) and black.
Regularly $39.99, now just $19.99 at Famous Footwear.com
.
.
Every little girl should be allowed to play in high heels, but every little girl also needs shoes that preserve her precious little feet.
What do you think of Suri’s high-heel stroll through the city?

Motorcycle Jackets are Hot!
Written by Mary Fetzer on September 17, 2009 – 12:38 am -
The latest trend in outwear is the motorcycle jacket. We’re not talking Harley Davidson biker chic (although that’s pretty cool, too).
We like the motorcycle jacket — in fabulous new colors and fabrics — paired with just about everything.
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite, most stylish celebrities for a fashion show of this contemporary and versatile piece.
Black Leather…
The classic black, leather motorcycle jacket is exactly what we expect to see on Kristen Stewart. Here, Kristen pairs her jacket with denim cutoff shorts, a simple white tee, funky jewelry and Joan Jett hair. Jacket by PRPS.
Colors…
Beige
Dakota Fanning (left) looks cool and casual in a beige leather motorcycle jacket. She takes an otherwise boring outfit and makes it super hip with this well-fitted piece from Bebe Antique. Even though we’re sometimes not sure if Dakota is a big girl or a young woman, her clothes somehow are always age appropriate.
Gray
Meanwhile, Jessica Stroup (right) is too hot to handle in this H&M faux leather motorcycle jacket. The amazing gray-blue color beautifully complements Jessica’s sexy black mini dress. We can totally picture Jessica’s 90210 character wearing this very jacket.

Brown
Another gorgeous Jessica (Biel, left) wears her biker jacket in brown. With casual jeans and a what could be Justin Timberlake’s scarf, Biel’s William Rast leather motorcycle jacket offers a nice alternative to biker-black. Biel is dressed for shopping, lunching, or just hangin’ around.

Fabrics…
We absolutely love Blake Lively’s contemporary motorcycle jacket. The Alexander Wang piece combines soft denim blue suede, lambskin sleeves and a silk lining.
Not just for girls…
We can always count on American Idol winner and fashion icon Adam Lambert to show us the trends. In his black leather motorcycle jacket from the Monarchy Collection, Lambert is the consummate pop and rock star.
Other celebs spotted in motorcycle jackets include Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss, Rihanna, Ellen Page, Demi Lovato and Rachel Bilson.
How about you? Do you like your leather black and studded or colorful and soft?

Forget the Hype: Buy a Classic, Practical Backpack for School
Written by Mary Fetzer on August 4, 2009 – 12:04 am -
You can find just about anything on a school backpack. Cute kids will see themselves coming and going with bags featuring iCarly, Team Jacob, Transformers, and Disney Princesses. A lot of these trendy packs are cute but useless. Some are too big (your preschooler can only bear so much), others are too small (your middle school kid needs enough room for books, her iPod/cell phone, etc….)
Some of the “pretty” ones are too delicate to withstand the daily wear and tear — set that pastel-pink pack on the floor of the bus just once and see what happens. And the newest thing — a clear, see-through backpack — is just too much temptation for little thieving classmates.
Jennifer Garner didn’t cave in to the fads. Violet sports a variety practical school backpacks. The bag shown here (at right) is just the right size for her. It doesn’t have a bunch of confusing zippers and pockets to frustrate the little preschooler. And it’s made of a durable, printed nylon that’s easy to wipe off.
Check out these smart choices online:
The LL Bean Original Book Pack (left) has been a customer favorite for 22 years. Designed for ages 7 and up, the Original Book Pack is great for young students carrying light-to-moderate loads. Built from durably nylon, the pack has a padded back panel and shoulder straps. As an added bonus, the 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material makes your child visible at night. It’s available online in a variety of prints for just $27.95.
The Heart Backpack at Walmart (right), just $15, is a sturdy, good-looking backpack. It features just enough compartments and organizer pockets to meet the average elementary-schooler’s needs. The bag measures approximately 12″W x 18″H x 7″D, so it’ll hold those larger textbooks and projects. Buy it at your local Walmart or online (just 97 cents for shipping & handling!).
Target’s Three Backpack (left) boasts a multicolored, floral/paisley pattern in your choice of pink, blue or purple. Young and old kids alike will appreciate the multiple compartments (including one that’s insulated) as well as interior accessory and cell phone pockets. Made of waterproof polyester, the Three Backpack is built tough for everyday use. It can be cleaned, just hand wash with mild detergent. Originally listed for $29.99, it’s now on sale for $23.99.
Okay, so my first-grader has a Hello, Kitty backpack… but it’s black, and it’s the right size for her, and it’s not too complicated, so I think it’s a smart choice. What famous character graces your kid’s backpack this year? Sponge Bob? Spiderman? Hannah Montana? Tell us!

Baby Hats are Cute and Practical
Written by Mary Fetzer on July 29, 2009 – 11:17 pm -
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are parents to mini-mom Violet and brand new, teeny-tiny Seraphina. Garner — sporting an always flawless complexion — obviously knows the importance of sun protection — for herself and her daughters. Garner says her hubby daddy dresses the girls. He certainly picked a winner with this perfect little sun hat.
Babies look precious in hats. From bonnets to ball caps, there’s a myriad of toppers to cover your baby’s noggin. Your cute baby will turn heads in one of these:
You can get a hat just like Seraphina’s at Pottery Barn Kids! The Rosebloom Print Hat (left) is by Liberty of London.
The wide brim offers protection, and the Velcro chin strap keeps the bonnet in place. This machine-washable cotton hat is available in sizes up to 5T and is on sale now for just $14.99 (regularly $28.00).
If your baby’s not into cute, practical and floral, check out the outrageous selection of punk hats at My Baby Rocks.
This brown Funky Skull beanie cap (right) is certified organic 100% cotton. Soft, stretchy, and hand-printed in the USA, this one-size hat fits most “punklings.” Buy it online for $10.95.

Baby Bananza.com has a fabulous assortment of sun hats for babies, like the Yellow and Pink Floppy Hat ($14, left) and the Blue Boat Beach Hat ($18, right). Both are perfect for little beach combers. Shop online.
So honestly, do you really think Ben Affleck picked out Seraphina’s little bonnet? It just doesn’t look like a guy choice to me.

Rock a Headband Like Paris Hilton
Written by Mary Fetzer on July 27, 2009 – 10:58 pm -
No matter how you feel about Paris Hilton, one thing’s for sure… the girl can rock a headband. Paris has single-handedly brought bright, flashy headbands back into style — wearing them for both casual and red-carpet occasions. We’ve seen other celebs copying the look, like Taylor Swift, Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie.
Headbands are available for girls of all ages, from infants to seniors. Here are just a few of your options:

For a day of school or shopping, copy Paris’ snakeskin headband. This easy-to-wear style looks polished, yet casual. Paris opts for a dark brown headband, which shows up nicely against her platinum hair. Brunettes may want to try a lighter color for more contrast. Check out Tano Jewelry Fashion Accessories‘ huge selection of headbands, including this brown snakeskin one for just $11.99 plus shipping.

Here, Paris flaunts a modern retro look with a neon pink bow headband. This youthful look is perfect for the younger set — more mature women might find themselves looking a little foolish in this style and color.
Abby’s Bowtique has a delightful array of big and little girl accessories, like this loopy satin bow headband. It’s available in dozens of colors and costs just $8!

Paris’ favorite headband is the glitzy braided type she wears like a crown. When embellished with diamonds, it’s not an everyday accessory, but there are adorable alternatives in a variety of materials like rope, acrylic and grosgrain. This wonderful Betsey Johnson Taxi Girl Headband is pricey at $56 but features faux pearls, gingham, and an enamel-filled flower charm. Shop Zappos.com for this and other cute headbands.
Tell us: Do you like the headband trend? If so, what’s your favorite look — classic, hippie, or glamorous?

Hire a Personal Shopper and Stylist for your Cute Baby
Written by Mary Fetzer on July 23, 2009 – 10:22 am -
When Julia Roberts needs a cute baby gift, she can call a personal shopper to get the job done. When Nicole Kidman needs a one-of-a-kind outfit for Sunday Rose, her stylist can take care of finding it for her. Wouldn’t it be nice to live like a celebrity?
Thanks to Allison MacCullough, you can! Allison spent several cold weekends searching Manhattan for just the right baby gift for a friend’s new baby. She couldn’t find any affordable hip, stylish merchandise for children. Frustrated by her lack of options, Allison opened Bundle, her own children’s clothing boutique in New York City.
Bundle offers gorgeous, unique apparel and merchandise for infants and toddlers. Designers like Velvet & Tweed, Acoustic and other celebrity favorites sell to only select stores, and Bundle is one of them.
Allison herself selects every item in the store, including baby hats, booties, clothing and sunscreen — for boys and girls alike. The merchandise consists of “soft, wearable fabrics in fun prints like stripes, plaids and florals. There are logs of cozy knits in colors that reflect the bright and wonderful personalities of children.”
Best of all, Bundle offers a convenient online Concierge Service — it’s like having your own stylist and personal shopper! All you have to do is visit the Bundle website, click on Concierge and complete the form. Allison’s team will find, wrap and ship the perfect gift — you never have to leave your house!
If you need a special gift for a baby shower or kid’s party, visit Bundle’s Concierge Service and receive 15% off your order through July 31st with coupon code cutekids15.
I’d love to have a stylist and personal shopper, but having my own hair and makeup people would be even better! What celebrity perk do you most covet?
